The Role

 

This is an exciting opportunity to work in a socially responsible company whose aim is to safely recycle and repurpose industrial waste, thereby reducing the impact on the environment while simultaneously reducing the cost to their customers.

 

The Financial Controller (FC) will manage the company’s accounting operations and ensure the financial and regulatory compliance of the company. 

 

The FC will be located in the Barbados office and report to the Managing Director.  The FC will supervise a senior and junior accountant.

The international, environmental services company was founded more than thirty years ago and is a privately held, family-run business.  The company, which has operating entities in seven countries, is focused on converting their customers’ industrial waste into assets.

 

Exceeding the accepted standards of environmental responsibility is at the core of their business culture. They are passionate about innovation and are constantly improving their processes and procedures and thereby, creating customised solutions for their customers.

 

They work with the most updated technologies and industrial by-product conversion processes.  Their deep understanding of the potential of by-products coupled with their technical expertise has been critical to their success in altering their clients’ practices towards preserving the environment.

 

The development of proprietary technology in one industry has not only led to the recovery and recycling of various by-products but the production of a useable on-site product. This results in improved yields for plants and a substantial reduction of costs to plants.  The company has consistently processed, disposed of and sold more than 1.5 million tonnes per year of different by-products.

Barbados

 

Barbados, the most easterly island of the Caribbean with a population of 285,000, is an idyllic island surrounded by spectacular beaches and waters.  There is a large expatriate community living and working on the island. They enjoy the laidback lifestyle, healthy outdoor living and year-round sunny climate.

 

Responsibilities

 

  • Manage the company’s accounting records with a view of identifying issues and risks that may inhibit the company’s financial health

  • Guide financial decisions by establishing, monitoring and enforcing appropriate financial, legal, tax and related policies and procedures

  • Comply with legal requirements by studying existing and new legislation; anticipating future legislation; enforcing adherence to requirements; filing financial reports; advising Board of Directors on needed actions

  • Prepare financial statements, oversee business policies and accounting practices

  • Coordinate and oversee the annual financial audit by liaising with key stakeholders including legal, audit, and tax advisors to ensure statutory financial obligations are met

  • Review current internal financial controls and define and implement any necessary improvements

  • Work closely with the company’s Risk and Profitability Specialist to evaluate and manage financial risk on all projects

  • Prepare budgets, analyze financial data, forecast revenue scenarios and assure the availability and efficient disbursement of funds to support project strategy

  • Manage, direct and organize the work of the accounting and finance department

 

Requirements

  • A degree in Accounting, Finance or related field or ACCA qualification

  • Postgraduate education (MSc or MBA) would be an asset

  • Experience in Financial Management, Accounting, Financial Controlling or Tax Compliance

  • Experience with strategic planning, risk management, corporate governance, Balance Scorecard a plus

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint

  • Working knowledge of SAP

  • Fluency in Spanish would be an asset
